Mentoring & Support Programs

Supporting Your Journey, Building Your Future.

At Young Leaders Youth Services, we believe every participant deserves the opportunity to feel heard, valued, supported and empowered to reach their full potential. Across New South Wales, we have built a strong track record of providing personalised mentoring and support to participants aged 6 to 35 across the disability, Out-of-Home Care (OOHC) and community sectors. Our services are built around genuine relationships, consistency and a commitment to understanding each participant as an individual — not simply the challenges or circumstances they may be experiencing.

Your Goals Are at the Centre of Everything We Do

No two participants are the same, which is why we don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to support. We take the time to understand each participant's goals, strengths, interests, support needs and aspirations before working alongside them to create meaningful opportunities for growth. Whether a participant wants to become more independent, improve their confidence, develop social skills, reconnect with education, explore employment, strengthen community connections or simply have someone positive and consistent in their corner, our mentors are there to support their journey. Our approach focuses on working with participants rather than doing things for them, encouraging choice, independence and active participation in decisions that affect their lives.

Mentoring Built on Genuine Connection

We understand that meaningful progress starts with trust and connection. Our mentors focus on developing safe, respectful and professional relationships where participants can feel comfortable being themselves, expressing their views and working through challenges at their own pace. Through 1:1 mentoring, community participation, life-skills development, education and employment support, activity-based programs and individualised support, participants are provided with opportunities to learn and grow through real-life experiences. Sometimes progress can be a major milestone. Other times, it can be having the confidence to try something new, attending school, completing a daily task independently, communicating how you feel or developing a positive connection with someone you trust. Every step forward matters.

Supporting the Whole Journey

We recognise that participants are often supported by a wider network of family members, carers, schools, support coordinators, caseworkers and other professionals. Where appropriate and with the necessary consent, our team works collaboratively with these support networks to create greater consistency around the participant and ensure everyone is working towards shared outcomes. For participants experiencing complex circumstances, our focus remains on seeing the person before the situation. We recognise strengths, celebrate progress and continue looking for opportunities that allow participants to develop confidence, resilience and greater control over their future.

More Than Support — Creating Opportunities

Our goal extends beyond delivering a support session. We want participants to leave our services with greater confidence, stronger skills, positive connections, meaningful experiences and a clearer understanding of what they are capable of achieving.

Through mentoring and community-based experiences, we aim to create pathways that support participants to:

  • Build confidence and self-belief.
  • Strengthen independence and everyday life skills.
  • Develop positive social and community connections.
  • Improve communication and emotional regulation.
  • Engage or re-engage with education and learning.
  • Explore employment, training and future pathways.
  • Participate meaningfully within their local community.
  • Develop decision-making and problem-solving skills.
  • Discover new interests, strengths and abilities.
  • Set personal goals and celebrate meaningful progress.

Your Voice. Your Choice. Your Future.

At Young Leaders Youth Services, participants aren't expected to fit into our services — our support is shaped around them. From the first connection through to every milestone achieved along the way, we aim to provide a service where participants feel respected, encouraged and empowered to have a voice in their own journey. Because meaningful support isn't about telling someone who they should become. It's about standing beside them while they discover who they want to become.

Individual Support. Meaningful Connections. Lasting Growth.

Personalised 1:1 Mentoring & Support

Our 1:1 mentoring support provides participants with consistent, individualised guidance built around their unique goals, strengths, interests and support needs. By working individually with a trusted mentor, participants have the space to develop at their own pace, build confidence and strengthen skills through meaningful real-world experiences. Research on mentoring has found that quality mentoring relationships can contribute to positive outcomes across areas such as social and emotional development, relationships, education and personal wellbeing. The quality and consistency of the mentoring relationship are important, which is why our approach focuses on trust, reliability and genuine connection.

At Young Leaders Youth Services, 1:1 mentoring goes beyond simply spending time together. Each session creates opportunities to work towards meaningful goals through community participation, life skills, emotional regulation, social development, education, employment pathways, independence and positive decision-making. Individual support also allows our mentors to recognise barriers that may be difficult for a participant to communicate in larger environments. By providing a safe and supportive space to talk, reflect and problem-solve, participants can feel heard, respected and valued while being encouraged to recognise their strengths and take an active role in their own development. Most importantly, 1:1 mentoring provides something powerful: someone consistently in the participant's corner — encouraging progress, celebrating achievements and supporting them through challenges.

One participant. One journey. Individual goals. Meaningful progress.

Group Mentoring Programs

At Young Leaders Youth Services, our Group Mentoring & Support Programs are designed around a simple belief: everyone deserves the opportunity to connect, participate, build meaningful relationships and feel like they belong. Our group programs bring together participants across different ages, abilities, backgrounds, personalities and life experiences in safe, inclusive and engaging environments. Rather than expecting participants to fit into one approach, our mentors work to understand the individual needs, strengths, interests and communication styles of each person so they can participate in a way that feels comfortable and meaningful to them.

More Than Just a Group Activity

Our group programs aren't simply about bringing participants together to complete an activity. Every experience provides an opportunity to develop important social, emotional and everyday life skills. Through sport, recreation, community participation, creative activities, workshops, life-skills programs and other shared experiences, participants are naturally encouraged to communicate, cooperate, problem-solve and build relationships with others.

These environments can support participants to develop skills such as:

  • Communication and active listening
  • Confidence in social environments
  • Building and maintaining friendships
  • Teamwork and cooperation
  • Understanding personal and social boundaries
  • Emotional regulation and self-awareness
  • Problem-solving and decision-making
  • Managing disagreements and conflict appropriately
  • Respecting different perspectives and abilities
  • Leadership and positive role modelling
  • Independence and community participation
  • Confidence trying new experiences

A Safe Space to Be Yourself

We recognise that joining a group, meeting new people or participating socially can be challenging for some participants. That's why creating a safe, respectful and non-judgemental environment is at the heart of our programs. Our mentors take the time to build trust and ensure participants feel heard, respected, supported and valued. Participants are encouraged to engage at their own pace without feeling pressured to communicate or participate in the same way as everyone else. We celebrate individuality and recognise that progress looks different for every person. For one participant, progress might mean introducing themselves to someone new. For another, it could mean participating in a team activity, communicating a boundary, managing frustration, supporting another participant or developing the confidence to take on a leadership role. Every achievement matters.

Creating Genuine Peer Connections

One of the greatest strengths of group mentoring is the opportunity for participants to develop connections with people outside their usual support networks. Our programs provide a structured environment where participants can meet others, discover shared interests and develop positive relationships through meaningful experiences. These connections can help reduce social isolation while strengthening a participant's confidence, sense of belonging and ability to navigate different social environments. Where appropriate, participants can also learn from and encourage one another. Positive peer role modelling allows participants to see others overcoming challenges, achieving goals and making positive choices, helping create a culture where participants support each other's growth rather than compete with one another.

Inclusive of Different Ages and Abilities

Our approach recognises ability before limitation. Activities can be adapted to support different abilities, developmental stages and individual needs so participants have meaningful opportunities to be involved. Our mentors provide guidance and additional support where required while continuing to encourage choice, independence and active participation. When programs include participants of different ages or experience levels, this can also create opportunities for positive leadership and peer encouragement. Participants who have developed confidence in an area may have opportunities to encourage others, demonstrate positive behaviours and recognise their own ability to positively influence those around them.

Turning Experiences Into Development

The development doesn't stop when the activity finishes. Our mentors use everyday experiences as opportunities for participants to reflect, learn and grow. A sporting activity can become an opportunity to practise teamwork and emotional regulation. Preparing a meal can develop communication and independence. A community outing can strengthen confidence and social awareness. A group challenge can teach problem-solving, patience and leadership. This allows participants to develop skills through real experiences rather than simply being told what to do.

Building a Community Where Everyone Belongs

Ultimately, our Group Mentoring & Support Programs are about creating more than activities — we are creating opportunities for connection, development and belonging. We want participants to leave our programs feeling more confident in themselves, more comfortable connecting with others and empowered to participate within their communities. Whether someone joins us to make new friends, develop social skills, increase their independence, build confidence, try something new or simply find a safe community where they feel accepted, our team is there to support their journey. At Young Leaders Youth Services, every participant brings something valuable to the group, every voice deserves to be heard and everyone deserves a place where they belong.

Connect Together. Grow Together. Belong Together.

We respectfully acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land on which we work and live. We pay our respects to Elders past, present, and emerging, and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

We recognise their ongoing connection to land, waters, and culture, and are committed to working together towards reconciliation and understanding.
