At Young Leaders Youth Services, we design innovative, evidence-informed programs and workshops that recognise every participant learns, grows, and engages differently. Our programs are tailored for individuals who may experience barriers within traditional education settings or require alternative approaches due to disability, trauma, neurodiversity, mental health challenges, or other personal circumstances.
Through strong partnerships with industry professionals, community organisations, and specialist service providers, we deliver engaging, hands-on programs in both community and in-house settings. Our practical, relationship-based approach has consistently demonstrated positive outcomes by building confidence, developing life skills, increasing independence, strengthening social connections, and creating meaningful pathways into education, employment, and community participation.
We don't just create programs we create opportunities for participants to discover their strengths, unlock their potential, and build brighter futures.

Our 10–14 Week In-House Barber Mentoring Program is far more than learning how to cut hair it's about building confidence, purpose, and a pathway towards independence. We recognise that traditional classroom environments aren't the right fit for everyone. Many of the young people we support thrive through practical, hands-on learning where they can see, do, and experience rather than simply sit and listen.
The program is delivered by experienced barber mentors who understand the importance of patience, consistency, and positive role modelling. Through one-on-one and small group mentoring, participants develop practical barbering skills while also strengthening communication, emotional regulation, teamwork, resilience, and problem-solving skills. Every haircut becomes an opportunity to build trust, celebrate progress, and reinforce self-belief.
Throughout the 10–14 week journey, participants gain far more than technical barbering knowledge. They learn punctuality, professionalism, personal presentation, responsibility, customer service, workplace expectations, and the value of commitment. These transferable life and employment skills prepare participants for future education, apprenticeships, employment, and greater independence. One of the greatest strengths of our program is the genuine relationships formed between mentors and participants. Many of our mentors bring lived experience alongside professional expertise, allowing them to connect with participants in an authentic and meaningful way. This creates a safe, supportive environment where young people feel respected, encouraged, and empowered to overcome challenges at their own pace.
The success of our Barber Mentoring Program is measured not only by the barbering skills participants develop, but by the lasting personal growth they achieve. Families, carers, schools, Support Coordinators, and stakeholders consistently report improvements in confidence, self-esteem, emotional wellbeing, engagement, behaviour, community participation, and motivation to pursue education or employment. For many participants, this program becomes the first time they truly believe in their own potential. It provides a sense of belonging, purpose, and achievement while creating genuine pathways into further training, employment, and the barbering industry. At Young Leaders Youth Services, we believe every young person deserves the opportunity to succeed. Our Barber Mentoring Program proves that when practical learning is combined with trusted mentors, lived experience, and genuine care, lives can be transformed.

Our structured Barbering Mentoring Program is more than a practical skills program it's a pathway to confidence, connection, and opportunity. Designed to inspire, engage, and empower young people, the program combines hands-on barbering education with mentoring in a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment where every participant is encouraged to succeed. The program can be delivered within schools, community centres, youth hubs, partner barber shops, community events, and organisations across Sydney, the Sutherland Shire, and the Illawarra region, ensuring participants can access meaningful learning in environments where they feel comfortable, supported, and motivated.
Facilitated by our experienced barber mentors, each session provides step-by-step training in professional barbering techniques while building essential life and employability skills. Participants develop communication, teamwork, respect, responsibility, resilience, emotional regulation, professionalism, customer service, and self-confidence skills that extend well beyond the barber chair and prepare them for everyday life.
What makes our program truly unique is the mentoring relationships that develop throughout the journey. Many participants who struggle in traditional classroom settings thrive through practical, visual learning, allowing them to develop new skills without the pressures often associated with mainstream education. Our mentors provide consistent guidance, encouragement, and positive role modelling, helping participants recognise their strengths and believe in their potential.
More than learning how to cut hair, participants become part of a supportive community where they build friendships, strengthen social connections, celebrate personal achievements, and develop a genuine sense of belonging. The program also introduces participants to potential education, training, apprenticeships, and employment pathways within the barbering industry, creating real opportunities for their future. Whether delivered as a 6–14 week mentoring program, a school-based initiative, a community workshop, or as part of a special event, our Barbering Mentoring Program equips participants with practical skills, greater confidence, increased independence, and the belief that they are capable of achieving their goals. It is a program that doesn't just teach a trade it empowers young people to build brighter futures.
